Sometimes your only choice is to say yes to something you know is right despite the fact you don’t have a plan, you don’t know what you’re doing, or how you’re going to cope. This can be scary.
In this episode I tell a story of when this happened to me and why not having everything worked out before I began was one of the most important experiences of my life. We don’t need to know the master plan before we can get stuck in and make a real and meaningful difference in the world.
There is a lot of talk these days about finding a sense of purpose and meaning in our lives and work. We may make a choice over whether to go into a situation or not based on if it fits our perceived purpose. But the truth is we often find purpose and meaning retrospectively.
It becomes clear once we say yes and start doing. Even if we don’t understand a bigger picture, we feel inadequate and unclear on how to get from here to the end.
You might not know what difference you’re having but that doesn’t mean you’re not having one.
It’s not necessarily about having a plan and it’s certainly not about having life figured out before we dive in. It’s about caring more about HOW we are responding, approaching, and doing despite not knowing exactly WHAT we’re doing.
There are three big factors that can stop me from doing what I know deep down I need to do and making a difference to a situation.
1. I Don’t Understand the Big Picture
For many introverts and highly sensitive people we have a desire to understand the bigger picture, the broader sense of why we are doing what we do.
It’s important to many of us to have a motivating factor that drives us, and to know the way things work in order to give ourselves to them.
2. I Don’t Have Manageable Steps
The key to achieving goals is to break them down into manageable steps. But what happens when you’re in a situation or dealing with relationship that has no long term goal? Can you still make a difference?
3. I Don’t Know What I’m Doing
We can find ourselves in new and unfamiliar places where we become overwhelmed by the fact we don’t know what we’re doing. It’s not a nice feeling.
So how can we get stuck in during those moments when these three major roadblocks appear?
Have a listen.
