There are two easy options for seeing the future in the way we deal and act within the present:
1. The Future as Superhero
I wish today away because once I have it out of the way everything will be so much better. Once I get the right tools I will be happy.
This is the way of a futile and perpetual hope for a day that will never come.
2. The Future as Anti-Hero
I will hold on to what I have because tomorrow it will be gone. Tomorrow is out to take everything away from me, and nothing will ever be as good as it used to be. Next week today will be the good old days.
I have been away for two weeks, in which time I got married to my lovely new wife, Nic. Lots has changed. We have a new house, we went away for a week and we are now settling back into our new life together.
In this episode I talk about some of the thoughts I had towards the day, and how we were able to shape our attitude to really enjoy it despite the fact that neither of us are particularly comfortable being the centre of attention.
A couple of the questions asked today:
- How can we face the things that push us beyond our comfort zones without taking on either of the two future-oriented mindsets above?
- Why is there more freedom in a finite human experience that involves death than in a world in which humans were to live forever?
There is freedom found within the finite experiences of infinite possibility.
